Gaborone, Botswana, 25 February 2025 – Torrential rains and severe flooding in Botswana have displaced over five thousand people, including children, disrupting access to clean water, healthcare, education, and shelter. The crisis is hitting the most vulnerable the hardest, increasing the risk of disease outbreaks.

As families struggle to cope, UNICEF is urgently appealing for US$350,000 to support government efforts to deliver life-saving aid and long-term recovery efforts. “Children are always the most vulnerable when disasters like floods, heatwaves, and storms strike,” said UNICEF Botswana Representative Joan Matji. According to government reports, about six children have lost their lives, homes have been destroyed, and many communities have lost access to safe water, putting them at serious risk of disease. “Women and children, in particular, face increased protection risks. We need urgent action to support those affected and help them rebuild their lives,” said Matji.

UNICEF is working with partners to support Government to provide life-saving interventions to meet the needs of children and families impacted by the floods. The response will include Water, Sanitation and hygiene services, psychosocial support, targeting communities in Ghanzi and greater Gaborone area. UNICEF is also committed to working with partners to ensure child-focused recovery efforts when floodwaters have receded.

“We urge all our donors—old and new, public and private—to step up and support this urgent mission.,” said Matji. This is essential for life-saving emergency response efforts, recovery initiatives, and disaster risk reduction strategies aimed at supporting the most vulnerable populations, particularly children, adolescents, and women who are bearing the brunt of this crisis.
